No Better Time to Enjoy Moore County’s Parks

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the outdoors is the one place that has never been off limits.  With summer upon us, it’s never been a better time than now to get outside and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine.  What better place to do that than at a local park?

Moore County has plenty of parks to choose from.  It is home to more than 20 municipal public parks and even a state park offering a variety of amenities including, but certainly not limited to, playground equipment, walking trails, basketball courts, sports fields, lakes, picnic tables/shelters, splash pads, and so much more.

On top of that, the Town of Southern Pines and the Village of Pinehurst each has their own greenway system that together are more than 20 miles where you can walk or run to your heart’s content.  The Bear Creek Trail System in the Town of Robbins has over 13 miles of trails through natural terrain.  One trail, the 3.75-mile Bear Creek Trail Loop, has been labeled as “difficult” in intensity for those wanting a more challenging hike.

Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve is a 900-acre state park in Southern Pines that is home to the oldest known living longleaf pine tree dating back to 1548.  This park has almost 5 miles of hiking trails through pristine longleaf pine and wiregrass forest, as well as an equestrian trail, where unique flora and fauna can be observed.

For those who aren’t looking for hiking trails but instead want a place to kick around a soccer ball, shoot a basketball, or hit a baseball, quite a few park facilities offer sports fields and courts where both organized and pick-up games are played.

Hillcrest Park in Carthage has 4 baseball/softball fields with a fieldhouse and concession stand, volleyball courts, playground equipment and picnic shelters. The Park is undergoing an exciting expansion that will add a 20,000+ square-foot recreation facility with 2 gyms having full-size basketball courts and a multipurpose room that can seat 100 people.  The basketball courts will have the flexibility to be converted to 4 volleyball courts, and the multipurpose room can be rented for private events.  The expansion also includes a new splash pad and baseball field addition that opened in summer 2019.

The Town of Aberdeen will soon have a new 32-acre municipal park on U.S. Highway 15-501 with the main entrance near Burney Hardware.  The preliminary site work is almost completed. Plans call for six rectangular sports fields, a concession building and restrooms.  The first fields are anticipated to be open for play in the spring of 2021.

Last December, town leaders closed the deal to purchase 15-acres with the Ransdell family contributing a 17-acre donation of adjacent land. Additional funding will be required to achieve the full scope of the proposed project. The town is actively working with community partners and individuals for donations, and also considering other revenue sources such as grants.

Construction of the concession building is being handled privately by the Ransdell family. The intent is to lease the building to the AC Sandhills organization while the town will also use the facility.

“When this is finished, it will be a regional destination for youth sports,” Town Manager Paul Sabiston said.

“This will be a nice addition for all of Moore County. The park will help this entire end of the county and it will certainly help Aberdeen,” said Mayor Robbie Farrell.
